Overview
Our project aimed to investigate the problem of excessive medication consumption and the resulting environmental pollution caused by pharmaceutical waste. To address this issue, our team decided to rebrand and promote Return Unwanted Medicine (RUM), a national not-for-profit organization supported by the government, through social media marketing. We proposed various strategies to enhance the RUM experience and shared them on social media, including 12 Instagram posts. As the branding and visual elements lead, I was responsible for creating the visual components.
Approach
The purpose was to increase brand awareness and community engagement with RUM.
We accomplished this by introducing several new touchpoints for the RUM brand, such as placing RUM bins in public areas, providing a QR code link to the map that shows the nearest RUM locations, and offering a pickup service for individuals who are disabled or live in areas where RUM bins are not available. We shared these initiatives on our Instagram page along with engaging content, such as stickers, giveaways, collaborations with influencers like environmental advocate Laura Wells, educational posts, and reels explaining how to dispose of medication properly.
By reducing the environmental impact of pharmaceutical waste and promoting responsible medication usage, we can create a better future for ourselves. Through our new RUM system, our audience can learn about the impact of pharmaceutical waste, scan the QR code, dispose of their unwanted medication, and return them to a local PBS-approved pharmacy or RUM bin.
